About The Game
Canvaleon is a platform and stealth game in which you will step into the shoes of Canvas, a friendly white chameleon, and help him using your abilities and the environment in order to overcome some really dangerous enemies and threats.
To do so, you will have to use different camouflages to blend Canvas with the environment. If your camouflage is similar to the background colours, your chances to overcome the enemies will increase.
There are two ways to obtain different camouflages: you can buy them at Doodle's shop, or you can paint them using the painting tool. You will have to collect lots of butterflies from every stage to paint or buy different camouflages!
Help Canvas get rid of the enemy threat, and successfully overcome more than 30 stages from this adventure full of dangers!
Some reviews are quite blunt in saying so others a little more subtle but the facts often remain if the reviewer is terrible at the game it tends to come across as a bad game in the review.
What does that have to do with the little white Chameleon going by the name of canvas on a platforming adventure to save his fellow villagers (all of whom have been terrible to him previously)
I’m terrible at this game.
The number of times I’ve seen the failed screen is crime against video game players.
But unlike so many of the reviewers that would simply throw this game into the review dirt I actually like it.
Let’s start off with the basics everyone in the village has been kidnapped except you and your artist friend.
There are more than 30 levels to complete all split into various world map areas.
These levels / Areas can be played in any order you desire after you’ve completed the first level.
For instance you could start off with an underwater level, beat it and carry on in that direction or then try out another area and say head for the park or the city ect.
Each area offers something new so it doesn’t feel like you’re playing the same kind of levels over and over again. (unless you die so much you actually are)
If you get sick of one worlds feature you can always go somewhere else and come back to it later.
Before I get to the unique selling point of the game it should be pointed out at this point this is not your standard easy walk in the park platform game.
Once the straight forward village is beaten you can head in any direction you like and take on the worlds in the order you desire.
Every single level is loaded with enemies you’ll either need to be very good at hiding (in a spot they can’t see or shoot you) or have the best camouflage at hand to hide in plain sight.
The camouflage is the core of the game play.
Throughout every level are a whole host of butterflies how many you pick up is completely optional but you’ll be needing them to create your camouflage and paint your chameleon.
I’d recommended playing the first level at least twice before you venture off into the big wide world firstly because it will give you a healthy amount of butterflies to start you off and secondly because you can pick up a sound track cd that only appears after you enter the level for a second time.
Playing the first level even the first time you do so will almost certainly lead you to believe the game is rather easy.
Then off you’ll go into the big wide world and for arguments sake let’s say you pick the desert level as your first destination.
You haven’t bought any paint yet because let’s face it you’ve just started you didn’t really look at the digital manual and the game appears to be pretty easy so let’s see how it goes right?
After all who needs stealth when you can speed run!
So you managed to get past the first couple of enemies but it doesn’t matter a great deal the result remains the same you still died!
9 out of 10 levels simply having a white canvas trying to do a speed run from A to B is never ever going to work. (I did manage to clear the park level in 25 seconds but still missed almost everything so it didn’t do much other than open the next level)
Okay so now you have a fair idea of what to do, speed running didn’t work so you better try a bit of stealth!
You know how to blend in with the background and the level background is almost all yellow luckily the shop has a pre made yellow paint you’ve got way more than enough butterfly from your 2 runs on level 1 so you buy and equip that.
This time you’ll nail it after all if the enemy can’t see you this game really can’t be that hard.
Back you go all pre made yellow and ready to go.
The first enemy is approaching you blend into the background all smug.
This is all going to be so easy!
No wait your camouflage percentage is at like 36% and he’s seen you and your dead again!
The pre made designs look good until you buy one realise that 39% is no where near enough to get you through the level.
Okay time for idea 3 you can make custom camouflage and it says right there that it works better than pre made stuff.
So let’s assume you’ve got enough butterfly to do this (or you go back to level one and get some more again) you enter the custom paint shop you convert your butterfly to paint you set up your canvas ready to paint him for the level and......
Wait what exact shade of yellow did you want again?
Was it all that one shade or did parts of the background have multiple shades or even lines ect?
Of course you could post a picture online or to miiverse to look back at and reference or go back and get a better look at it (and die again in the process)
And the colour doesn’t need to be exact but the closer it is the more effective it will be and the less you’ll fail.
Because you will fail again and again.
And lets just throw this in here for fun at this point the game has no check points if you die centimetres from the beginning or the end you are starting right back at the beginning.
Or what if you have enough of the desert and want to try out the water level.
Now you’ve got the same problem all over again the premade blue will get you killed more often than it will save you so you’re going to have to remember what you’re doing, go back and create something to use.
And even if you find something near perfect for a level beat it grab a load of butterfly rescue the chameleon even score an S rank (yes it has ranks too for the sadistic and talented) the next level in the same area is just as likely to throw up something that makes the camouflage in the previous level about as useless as going in white!
And there are plenty of levels that will require more than one set of camouflage (you can take up to 4 on a mission with you)
You’ll constantly be creating new camouflage for new levels and will undoubtly spend some time with trial and error trying to get a colour or colours that work.
This is the only part of the game that loses some appeal to me.
I genuinely like the concept in theory but I’m not remotely artistically inclined and have little desire to return time and again to colour in canvas and get him right for the next challenge ahead.
If the pre made colours made the levels beatable but difficult I’d have taken that but as it stands the pre made colours (at least on the levels I’ve played) all mean near certain death.
Of course user made content has to be accepted and it’s a unique offering for the game but it’s not one I’m particularly well suited or motivated enough to pull off with a great deal of skill.
Getting the camouflage right is the only way to succeed 53% really isn't high enough but at least it's a start.
A genuine challenge in an era of hand holding platform games.
S rank to be earned on all levels
Open world lets you choose which area and level you want to take on.
A unique experience.
So many colours and options to chose from and all the styles you can make an artist could spend hours here.
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
A fair amount of trial and error will happen for almost every single player regardless of skill
Likely to prove too difficult or frustrating for a fair few players.
If you’ve no desire to colour your chameleon you've no chance with the game.
If I had a game for every time I'd seen this screen I'd have almost doubled my already excessive collection!
This game will divide the opinion of not only review sites and reviewers across the world but also those that make the purchase on Miiverse without doing a single bit of research on it.
If you want a platforming challenge that will put up a fight for 100% completion and S rank on every level even if you had a pre made picture of every required canvas to beat a level this is the game you’ve been looking for.
It makes no apologies for being difficult and neither should it!
If you were of the opinion that you’d just splash a little colour on the chameleon and romp through the 30 + levels you’re going to hate the experience.
I don’t doubt for a second some reviewers and gamers that are simply bad at this game will mark it down on the score card.
I’m not artistic, it’s the only part of the game dragging me down and halting my progress my lack of skills and desire doesn't make the game bad.
