Legacy will be making a few small changes to how & when we post the digital store updates
How long can it possibly to to "copy & paste" a few digital store updates?
It probably seems like a quick 5 minute job to copy the names of a few games coming to a digital store that day or week.
I certainly agree it hardly sounds like the most time consuming task in the world when compared to some other parts of the website like reviews and even worse the check lists (I'll cover these in another editorial next week)
But for Legacy at least publishing a list of new games coming to a digital store is way more than just a quick copy and paste.
We tag every single post (both in the news section & the home page summary section) with every developer and publisher of each game you can't see them all in the tag bar but they're all tagged for the search bar and for links in their eventual individual database page.
So for an example a couple of days ago we did a steam store update where added more than 30 games to the release list for that day and over 100 tags to the individual posts tag list. (Twice)
Needless to say it takes more than a little while.
If all that wasn't enough we check the details of each and every game we add to a list to make personal notes of any websites, social media accounts & contact details (for the games, publishers and developers)
Of course that's crazy over kill but we want to build the ultimate database and long term it will save us many many hours (even weeks and years) of research.
So what and when will we be posting
The main thing that's changing is the Steam store updates.
After today's post (September 24th covering all new releases on September 23rd) the Steam store update will change to a once a week update posted on a Sunday covering the past 7 days (Sunday to Saturday)
Of course this means every Sunday I'll have a 300+ list of new games on the steam store and an insane amount of tags and while I'll regret my choice every Sunday morning when I sit back and look at the list of games in front of me it will free up far more time during the week to work on all the other things that also take up far more time due to my excessive little quirks.
As for the other digital stores Both Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox will have 2 entries a week.
Nintendo and PlayStation stores will cover North American / European regions. (I'd very much like to cover Asia and Oceania areas as separate posts at some point in future but we'll have to see how that goes)
The Xbox updates will have a next week on Xbox post (obviously covering the games going on sale next week)
And this week with gold (all the sales that week)
These store updates will be regular features on various days from next week.
Hopeful inclusions in future
At some point in the future I'd also like to include updates for Itch.io
I already have access to this data but when or how often these updates might start appearing on Legacy are still far too early to say.
I'd also like to include weekly updates for Google Play, iOS app store and the Amazon app store at some point in the future.
While I know the vast majority of people likely to be visiting Legacy largely play games on dedicated consoles or PC Legacy's goal is to cover ALL aspects of the gaming industry in whatever form that takes.
However while these goals would at some point in future be desirable for database an archival reasons (as well as insanely work heavy) at the present time Amazon, Apple and Google have all told us they don't have an easy way to give us such data at this time (nor do they have an adequate / accurate way for us to collect the data ourselves)
The Windows store is something I only really considered while writing this editorial so I'll do some research into it and if it's plausible and within reasonable current work load limits it could be introduced in the near future.
Finally I was asked a few days ago if I'd consider a Ouya release list. (they seemed quite serious having recently having bought one)
I was under the impression games were no longer happening (admittedly it wasn't something i'd checked for a long time.
But having now checked it appears games are still being released but at no more than 3 or 4 a month and some months still don't see any release at all.
So as long as it's still supported we'll post a monthly update of Ouya releases and I'll look to put a Ouya check list out in early 2018.
