About The Game
In Urban Champion, prove you're the toughest guy on the streets. Block, punch and dodge your way through opponents to force them back – and down the open manholes!
Plus, you'll have to contend with angry neighbours dropping flower pots and avoid the attentions of the cops, too.
Battle solo against computer controlled foes or face off against a friend in the two-player mode.
Urban champion is a hugely frustrating game.
It features 99 rounds (but without cheating most wouldn't even get a quarter of the way.
The game was released 3 years before the original Street fighter and is surely responsible for showing every other fighting game ever what NOT to do!
As far as offence goes you have two options hard or light punch & a choice of aim face or the stomach.
Yes this is fighting at it's most basic.
However it should be noted that basic game play alone doesn't mean a game is a failure or can't be enjoyed.
All Pac man did in the 80's was roll around the same maze level after level and eat dots but things turned out rather well for him!
Round one and already getting hit on the head with plant pots!
The background changes.
Of course when I say changes I mean the colours are changed and the name on the building is different nothing else really ever changes.
You have 3 lives this cannot be improved upon as there are absolutely zero opportunities to earn any more.
The cpu effectively has 99 lives but it's fairly irrelevant you'll quit well before then or even if you have the persistence to go for it you'll get soundly beaten!
Every time you or your opponent is reduced to their last life a man hole will appear behind you / them knock them into the manhole to win.
Well I say win the cpu automatically gets 3 new lives to come at you all over again.
When you are knocked into the manhole that's it you lose, game over!
Round 32 and we're both down to our final life whoever ends up down the Man hole is out (Well unless it's the cpu then they'll just come back with 3 more lives obviously.
During the fight people will occasionally stick their heads out of the windows and drop a flower pot getting hit on the head by one will stun you or your opponent and provide a great opportunity to land a hard shot.
A police car occasionally (but not very often) drives by causing a break in the fight fighters to both return to their respective sides and whistle away like nothing had ever happened.
I might be slightly cynical in saying it but the police always tend to turn up when you're winning the fight or close to knocking your opponent off the screen but never seems to arrive when you're taking a severe beating!
As you advance through the levels the cpu gets harder and harder to even stun until it's near impossible (even if your cheating)
You can block and dodge punches but by level 60+ these have almost zero effect and it takes sheer dedication and blind luck along with restore point abuse to get much further
My personal record is 65 (see screen below)
I'd like to see what happens at the end of round 99 (I assume it will just reset to level 1) but without resorting to restore points neither myself nor do i believe any other player will ever find out.
Finally on a quick note the game does feature a 2 player option so if you can find someone willing to play the game with you at least you'll both have the same number of lives.
Round 65 and I finally bit the bullet and succumbed to defeat.
I did this with no restore points at all my closest since this attempt was level 46
The game has 99 rounds for the out of this world talented. (or insanely restore point abusing obsessive)
It has a 2 player option where both players actually have the same number of lives!
Full off tv support I know all vc do I'm clutching at straws here)
The purchase of the game is entirely optional!
Victory is sweet and early on all too easy to achieve.
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
It's a bit hard to offer improvement on a game so old designed in a completely different era so many console generations ago
I didn't own this game back in the 80's if I had I'd likely have been as completely infuriated with it as I am now.
If a time machine is ever offered up to me I'll be sure to go back & ask for the ability to earn more lives in the game
The police always seem to randomly turn up and break the fight just as I'm about to put him in the man hole!
Viewed as a 80's hardcore how far will you get because 99.9% of you will never beat the game Urban Champion might provide light occasional relief to a select few.
The dedicated of today could even upload screens of their record level on Miiverse
Unfortunately due to restore points that option is somewhat rendered at least partially pointless (you could upload a screen of the restore point menu seconds later proving you've never used it)
Even with the restore point option the game is so hard you'd have to save after every rare & successful hit by round 70 & you'll still likely never beat it.
With no way to gain lives & a cpu with 96 more lives than you it certainly has limited appeal
2 player vs is at least a fair option but with such basic moves you might as well go slightly more expensive & get one of the street fighter games. This is definitely only for the very dedicated hardcore or those few who really just want to see how good they are against one of the true 80's mission impossible games.
Very few others will play more than half an hour.
