About The Game
The year is 199X. The world's most dangerous racing competition has been created: the INFINITRACK GP! Created by, oh, I don’t know, some nefarious corporation I suppose, it stretches on indefinitely and has never been completed by anyone! Of course, that hasn't stopped thousands of thrill-seekers from attempting to conquer it every day with their shiny new bikes and speedy new hot rods.
One day, you decide to join those who have etched their names in the halls of glory by challenging this course yourself. There's just one problem – you've somehow managed to get onto the track, driving the wrong way! Choose your vehicle, give it a paint job and some upgrades, and see how far you can make it on the Infinitrack. This is Hot Rod Racer!
Hot Rod Racer is a fundamentally a high score chasing game.
How many meters can you get along the track before as with all high score chasers your game comes to an abrupt end.
The premise is that you’re driving down the race track in the wrong direction and you’ll want to get as far as possible before you crash in a ball of flames and post your score to the online leader board.
But don’t feel too bad while there are a good number of cars and bikes heading right towards you there are equally as many driving in the same direction as you so you’re certainly not alone.
As you may have read up at the start the infinity track is the most dangerous track in the world and trust me every single thing out there is most definitely designed to ensure you don’t survive very long.
Even aside from the oncoming traffic because you’re driving in the wrong direction (which means the track can’t go on indefinitely by the way as it clearly has 2 sides to get on) there are plenty of other hazards out there waiting to end your run.
Orange barrels are found throughout the course and are presumably packed with explosives because if you hit one your chosen vehicle will come to an explosive end.
Rocks are spread both on and around the track naturally hitting one of these will result in the same results as hitting an explosive barrel.
And of course I can’t forget the bushes and killer cactus just minding their own business hoping perhaps they’ll have the glory of taking you out.
So if you want to nail a high score and rack up those meters on track all you have to do is avoid the other cars and bikes on track (travelling in both directions) miss the explosive orange barrels, don’t drive into a rock and miss the greenery and you’ll be good right?
Of course not!
This is the most dangerous racing competition in the world!
To add to all of the hazards above there is also water (It looks a little too icy in colour but I’m convinced it is water) and black bottomless pits.
Now that’s surely enough to not only ensure nobody will ever finish the most dangerous competition in the world but also ensure that if you want to sit at the top of the rankings (local or online) you’re going to have to work for it.
Oh and before I forget after a relatively short length of time you’ll also find tanks parked up by the track trying to shoot you!
Good luck out there!
Both the car and Bike come in a choice of 5 colours & all 4 vehicles have their own stats & upgrade options.
Despite all of the above I wouldn’t describe this game as especially frustrating or overly difficult.
It’s certainly a challenge when it comes to getting the very highest scores and the track layout is very much designed to stop you at every opportunity but something far too many reviewers and gamers forget these days is that success in any game should be earned not just expected.
The controls themselves work rather well I prefer the D-pad to the control stick as it feels a little less loose on the movement but as I spend many hours with retro consoles I tend to always gravitate towards the D-pad when not playing 3d games so it’s more of a personal preference than anything else.
The outer track style is split into four different types Grass, Water, Desert & Black pit.
Grass and desert sections are largely similar affairs driving off track slows your vehicle down & home to bushes / cactus as well as rocks.
Grass sections also have an occasional small puddle or two just to add to your hazard list.
Water and black pit sections are far more dangerous sections of track.
Leave the track for any reason and your race is over.
But of course just because you have less room for manoeuvre in terms of track space don’t expect to get off any more lightly the track is still littered with exploding barrels, rocks and vehicles heading in both directions.
The order and style of the track seems to be entirely randomized while most of the time I started with a grass section it wasn’t always the case and what came next changed just as often too.
Likewise the road layout wasn’t always the same every time, it does appear that there are only a set number of road layouts for each section but they are always placed in a random order and trying to memorise the track is largely of very little overall help.
Take a look at this scene what here can end your run?
Answer absolutely everything!
Thanks to that nefarious corporation so far we have a track with a random layout and so many things on them that are just begging to end your ride at all costs but what exactly will you be riding?
You’ll start off with a Hot Rod Car
You also have a choice of 5 colours for your chosen vehicle, Black, Green, Yellow Red (except in reality it’s orange) & Blue.
Bikes will be quickly unlocked & have a much higher top speed and a bigger fuel tank.
Run out of fuel and you’ll presumably meet your end though at no point in the entire game did this ever happen to me with so much else out there to end your race for the slightest lapse in concentration you probably never will either!
The bike is also obviously much smaller and makes it slightly easier to dodge obstacles.
The Hot Rod might be slower, have less fuel and be much wider but it can also fire rockets why you might ask?
Well you’re racing on a track by a nefarious corporation that nobody has ever finished why wouldn’t you want your car to fire rockets?
See that incoming car or bike heading right towards you?
One shot and bang it’s gone right out of the way.
See that orange barrel up ahead waiting to stop you from increasing your best score bang and it’s no longer an issue.
See that rock blocking the road up there?
One shot and bang!
That wasn’t the rock exploding you just found out that your rockets can’t remove rocks (or bushes or cactus in case you’re wondering) and now it’s too late you crashed and it’s game over but you get the general idea.
Think of the bike as a hard mode and the car as a slightly easier mode of playing the game.
More fuel is obtained by driving through blue barrels or driving over what looks like oil spills (I avoided those for so long expecting them to spin me into something nasty.
If you shoot a blue barrel or another vehicle hits one it will turn into an oil spill that you can still drive over to gain extra fuel but not as much as you would going through a barrel.
The game also has a nice progression system in place where at the end of each race your total distance is added to a collection and you’ll receive a number of updates each time you level up (after reaching a set distance.
There are 21 levels in total, the unlocks alternate so you’ll get an item Extra fuel, better rockets, more speed, and new vehicles with one level up then a Miiverse stamp with the next then back to an upgrade followed by another stamp ect.
It’s a nice way of giving the game some purpose and something to aim for other than just score chasing and some of the upgrades in particular the 2 unlock able vehicles do add more depth to the choices and both are preferred more by me.
Finally no score chaser is really complete if you have no real way of comparing scores.
An online leader board as well as a local one is present for the competitive players among you.
Local is a 3 initial deal only affair while the online one will display your NNID.
There are a couple of teething issues with these but they are being looked into already and the company has a good track record of fixing bugs and adding content to past his release.
Even if one game freeze on the score board did cost me an all time worldwide high rank of 3 at the time.
Despite having completed the game, earned all the unlocks and sitting in the top 10 of the online boards I’m still motivated enough to start the game up for quick sessions and see if I can ever make it to number one long enough for the upcoming Legacy World records features (Yes I do have a few)
If you try get that blue fuel pick up at the top it is 100% certain you will not survive!
Challenging play (Not a positive for all)
Online leader boards
21 unlocks to prolong game play.
Different vehicles do make a difference to play and strategy.
Nice music and not the standard annoyances you often get with games of this price.
Number 3 in the world!
Now to pus on for number one and a feature in the Legacy World Records.
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Leader boards have some minor glitches (already being looked at)
The Red colour option gives you an orange car / bike (It’s very minor but sometimes these things bug me)
The basic graphical style will instantly put some players off.
It would be nice to see a future update with leader boards for each vehicle separately
Very occasionally (largely in water areas) if using a bike it the position of obstacles and cars makes it near impossible to progress.
At 90 meters it was a most emabrssing crash too!
It's included in the video below if you want to see this and more terrible bike riding.
The graphical style won’t appeal to everyone; perhaps even in this day and age the graphical style won’t appeal to the majority.
But graphics alone don’t make a game.
Some people won’t like the challenge.
But it’s a score chaser if you can go on forever and ever what would be the point?
The game was made essentially by a one man on what I expect was a relatively small budget.
Within those constraints he’s done what I consider to be a reasonable job.
It’s not the best game you’ll ever play, it’s not the most polished, the most challenging or the most fun, you won’t have a burning desire to play it every day and perhaps a fair few of these that do beat the game (unlock everything) will consider it finished and complete and never stat it up again.
But even then they’ve had a few hours game play for their budget price they paid.
I have beat the game, I have all the unlocks, I’m not about to terrorize the Miiverse community with stamps or anything but I will come back between games or just when I have a little free time and see if we can finally nail that world number one spot.
If you’re after something cheap, simple to play but still holding a bit of a challenge and a competitive score chasing element this could be for you.
Every body has a different version of what spoilers are and arent.
While we'll do our best to hide major plot twists in these previews there is likely to be content you might consider a spoiler.
They won't auto play themselves so it's all up to you.
