In general kids games tend to review badly, reviews are written by adults most of whom have absolutely zero interest in kids games and the reviews are conducted in offices or rooms of the home that either don’t have any kids in or have kids who don't even try the game.
Wherever possible I let my kids play the games before writing a review.
This makes a review fairer but it's still just as subjective as more adult orientated game review my kids will love games others kids will hate and my kids will hate games other kids will love.
But at least the review has had a test with the intended audience.
The game comprises of 8 themed worlds each represented by an animal six of the animals have five mini games each the other two for reasons unknown only have three mini games.
That gives a total of 36 mini games split into twelve different types.
The game tries it's best to promote positive reactions.
Find / click me – Point at the screen and click the Animal who you're playing with.
Jigsaw –for these 18 piece puzzles you're given five seconds to see a picture then put that jigsaw back together you'll only have access to three random pieces at a time and have five jigsaws in a row to complete with just three lives for mistakes.
Memory build –again you're given a picture of an item (varies across worlds from cakes to statues and more) after the five second preview you have to put the item back together by selected the correct three parts (top, middle & bottom) each of the parts has various choices and you have to select the right colour of the item too. (if you hover over the colour during the 5 second preview you'll only have to click it & remember the parts)
Friend finder / click them – same as the first game but instead of clicking on your animal you have to click all the others.
Sound rhythm – A follow the pattern type game exclusive to the Panda’s world the five animals will play sounds in order and you have to repeat that order with each correct turn the pattern gets longer and longer.
The sound rhythm game should connect well with it's target audience.
Balloon rescue –A game exclusive to the horse your animal friends are floating up through the sky attached to balloons grab up to three at a time and drag them over to the safety of the clouds on either side of the screen.
Hit the hot air balloon or storm clouds though and lose a life.
Pairs –Standard game of cards choose a card and then chose another to try and match it every time you clear the cards advance to the next stage and get a bigger set of cards to clear.
Cake Mix –A game exclusive to the pig’s world you have to select the ingredients from the two conveyor belts as they go past (list is on the side of the screen but personally I just click the ones that are flashing.
Treasure seek – Use your Wii mote as a flash light and find the key to open the chest once open place in as many gold coins as you can (in around seven seconds) after that you'll have to search for another key to reopen that chest and place more coins inside.
River cross –A game exclusive to the Reindeer as you help your friends across the icy river by tilting your Wii mote left and right to get them across on a floating sheet of ice.
Go too fast or too slow they might fall in.
Log sea-saw – Another game exclusive to the reindeer again with the Wii mote tilted you'll sea-saw the log left or right to collect as many of the items as possible.
Collecting snowballs will lose you points as will dropping an item (except snow balls) into the river but if you drop in yourself you'll lose a life.
Cloud climb – bounce higher and higher up the clouds where does it end nobody knows. (Actually I do know it ends when the time runs out or you run out of lives)
It’s the weakest of all the games and doesn't work especially well at all but that will be covered later in the review.
There are plenty of 16 piece jigsaws to do in the game but some younger kids will almost certainly need some help here.
Bright and colourful characters most kids will probably love.
Could potentially help kids with memory and concentration.
Great for family game play for parents who want to play and engage in games with their kids.
9 of the 12 mini games are fairly child friendly and are reasonably easy to pick up and play
In the click me games you either have to click the animal your playing with or click any animal but the one your visiting. Almost all kids should find pointing and clicking easy enough
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Younger kids in particular may struggle if playing alone.
Mini games lack enough variety.
Lack of game pad function.
(ONLY ON WII U VERSION)
The Wii U version has one major issue If /when you beat all of the games 36 mini games you are taken to the credits screen, once you restart playing regardless which mini game you select it takes you to the credits again.
Meaning once all 36 mini games have been beaten you can’t actually play a single game without restarting which locks all but the first mini game in each world and you have to unlock them all again
This is a glaring flaw that a mini game collection can no longer be played because you had the audacity to actually beat the games (this is not something I’ve read on a single review site so you have to ask how much of the game did these reviewers actually play they clearly didn’t get to the end)
I have a compromised way around it which means not playing one of the mini games.
I'd recommend not playing the count's third game (cloud climb) this way all other games will have access & you can still play the cloud game with the reindeer.
The cloud climbing game is the worst of the set and one I'd suggest you skip for the reasons set out above.
For the most part I enjoyed playing this game with my kids, my son who was 3 years old at the time definitely paid more attention than he normally would and did pretty well with the memory games he couldn't have done it on his own but he likes the experience and certainly got better as days / weeks went by.
